Tourists barred from using road passing through Jarawa tribal area

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday restrained tourists from using Trunk Road, which connects Port Blair with the Greater Nicobar, saying that it passes through a tribal reserve area inhabited by Jarawa tribals.
A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi said that only government officials and people living there would be allowed to use the road.
The bench directed the administration to file an affidavit along with a detailed map signifying the area of the Jarawa tribals and posted the matter for more hearing on February 26.
The apex court had on July 3 last year had barred all kinds of commercial and tourism activities within five km radius around the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
It had upheld the notification to announce an area upto five km radius around the tribal reserve as 'Buffer Zone' and forbid entry of any person other than a member of aboriginal tribe into it.


Two constables arrested for misbehaving with lady instructor

Port Blair:Two police constables in the Andamans have been arrested for misbehaving and abusing the modesty of a woman computer instructor, official sources said on Monday.
The two constables undergoing computer training at PTS Prothrapur were arrested under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and section 34 (common intention) of IPC on January 01, the day the complaint was lodged by the instructor, the sources said.
The Police department was also initiating disciplinary proceedings against the two for misbehavior, a communication from SP, South Andaman District said.


Twin quakes hit Nicobar, no Tsunami threat

New Delhi: Two moderate intensity earthquakes hit the Nicobar Islands on Wednesday, however there is no threat of a Tsunami, initial reports said.
The first earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter Scale and was recorded at 01:23:21 PM at epicentre located at 8.973°N, 93.963°E, 326 km South South East of Port Blair and 1562 km East South East of Chennai.
The first quake was immediately followed by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake in the same region 9.042°N, 94.097°E at 1.42.24 PM at a depth of 13.8 km.
The same region was rattled by a powerful earthquake measuring 8.2 – epicentre near Sumatra coast - on April 11.
